The sophistication of Fine Art will meet the buzz of Formula 1 at the official launch of
the Drang Gallery in Padstow later this month.
Visitors and guests at the gallery launch on April 16th will be greeted by a 3m long
sculpture of a Mako Shark, constructed from the chassis of Jenson Button’s 2008
Formula One Grand Prix racing Honda.
It is the work of ex-Formula 1 mechanic-turned-contemporary artist Alastair Gibson,
who spent 10 years in the pit lanes before turning his hand to sculpture.
The carbon-fibre Mako Shark is one of his most dramatic pieces, and will form the
centrepiece of the launch event in the Cornish harbour town.
Gallery owner Justin Easton said: “We are delighted to be hosting such fabulous
modern sculpture at our launch party.
“I feel privileged to have Alastair present to talk about his art.”
Mr Gibson commented that he was looking forward to the opening.
He said: “I feel the best place to show my latest work is as close to the ocean as
possible and the Drang Gallery has given me this opportunity.”
Other artists whose work will be available at the gallery include household names
such as Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake.
Prestigious artists Ilric Shetland, Michele del Campo, Peter Brown and Adam Arbeid
will also be represented, along with sculptor Adam Binder who was awarded “Wildlife
Artist of the Year” 2010.
Also included in the portfolio are Cornish contemporary artists, including Heath Hearn
and Katy Brown amongst others, who will be holding exhibitions at The Drang
towards the end of the summer.
Many of these artists will be present at the official launch on 16th April.
Manager Vicki Taylor said the launch was an open event for anyone interested in
exceptional art.
She said: “We will warmly welcome anybody looking to view, invest in or admire
some of the best modern art work available currently in Cornwall.
“Already there has been an enthusiastic response to the work we have on display,
and we are looking forward to displaying a range of exciting artworks throughout the
summer.
“The Drang is a lovely space situated right on Padstow waterfront, and it is wonderful
to be able to bring such fantastic contemporary art to such a setting here in
Cornwall.”
The gallery will be officially opened by the Mayor of Padstow, Cllr Keltie Seaber, at
3pm on April 16th.
